Most Americans are required to file either an individual or business tax return - or both. Here are some important TAX FILING facts to be aware of.
1) April 15, 2026 is the final deadline to file your 2025 federal tax return.
Most taxpayers must file by this date to avoid IRS penalties — whether you expect a refund or owe.
2) If you expect a refund, you must still file to claim it.
Refunds don’t happen automatically. The IRS won’t send money you don’t request.
3) If you owe taxes, penalties begin the day after the deadline.
Late filing and late payment penalties can stack quickly, and interest compounds daily.
4) Your state filing deadline may differ from the federal one.
Some states extend their deadlines automatically, while others do not. Always verify both.
5) Businesses have different filing deadlines than individuals.
Most partnerships and S-Corps are due in March, and C-Corps often file in April — but all require proper documentation throughout the year.
